Chancellor Charles Smith of Meridian was shot as he exited his vehicle at the court house this morning around 7:30. He was taken to Anderson Hospital by ambulance with considerable loss of blood and is in surgery.
Those are all the facts we have at this time.
God bless Judge Smith and all our judges. His family is living one of my worst nightmares. I am praying for his full recovery. Our Legislature and county authorities must take action to secure courthouses.
Larry.. no, under the circumstance, Judge Primeaux, if Judge Smith’s ambush and shooting has anything to do with his role in the judicial system, it is a sobering reminder of just how crucial, even fundamental as a part of the bedrock, the role judges play in the ability of a civil society to be a civil society. That may sound like hyperbole. It isn’t. We are a nation and people of laws, even if some refuse to recognize that bedrock principal. And once that basic thing is treated as a secondary consideration, we are in serious trouble. Our best thoughts for everyone in the 12th.
Praying for God’s healing for Judge Smith and for peace and comfort for his friends, family and loved ones.

Is it perhaps time to rethink our opposition to public executions?
We will keep Judge Smith and his Family in our Prayers.
This is horrible. Prayers are with him and his family.
