Chickenfeed Brings the Chickens Home to Roost
August 15, 2016 § 8 Comments
Our legislature slashed the Department of Mental Health’s budget, and that agency, forced to do its job on mere chickenfeed, has slashed services. It’s a topic I’ve discussed before here and here.
Now the chickens have come home to roost, as the saying goes. The U.S. Justice Department has sued the state (that’s us) for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and some other federal laws. You can read about the suit here.
Business as usual in Mississippi: we have to be sued time and time again to make our state do the right thing, or the constitutional thing, or simply to abide by the law.
“This appears to be yet another attempt by the federal government to dictate policy to the states through the courts,” Bryant said. “The current system of mental health in Mississippi has existed for many years, yet the DOJ has now decided to take issue with it.”

The governor seems not to like the feds using the courts to make Mississippi treat mentally ill people as people.
A columnist wrote in the Clarion Ledger today about the top ways to live longer and healthier were:
1 Exercise
2 Don’t smoke and
3 Don’t live in Mississippi
Lack of empathy for the plight of others and their families who don’t know where turn exacerbates their and thus society’s problems. Every chancery clerk & sheriff knows what the issues are here.
My original post had another nine paragraphs, mostly scorching. After letting it stew a couple of days I was able to pare it down to the essentials.
Here is where I get lost. The fact is the poor and disenfranchised, the uneducated that Phil Bryant plays to, they don’t vote. If you are a business person none of this is good for your business. So who exactly are voting for these people and why?
“So who exactly are voting for these people and why?”
Racists, fundamentalists, and people who don’t care what happens so long as their taxes don’t go up.
Unfortunately, the Civil War is not yet over.
I agree with everything said here. Phil Bryant is a disaster and he is destroying the state. Bryant won’t even be sued into compliance, as he will just ignore the rulings until his term ends.
