Where in Mississippi is this? (The tire-man sculpture is about 20 feet tall, btw; the horse is real).

I’m a TV producer at Mississippi Public Broadcasting and have been asked to look into this structure for a possible segment on one of our shows. I would be interested in hearing back from anyone who is familiar with the tire man. We’d love to get some first hand accounts–or even speculations–for this fun piece.

I’ve enabled email notifications if anyone replies to this post.

    Thanks in advance!

  • I walked around it to take pictures for a blog post I did about this, and saw that there were lights rigged up (in a state of decay) that once spotlighted it at night. I puzzled about the statute, and someone wrote this in comments:

“Constructed by Mr. Jerry Fred Aron, the tire man has been around since at least 2006. He used to hold a large Mississippi flag in his raised hand. Apparently it has either been removed or blown away.”

    • Larry says:

Thanks for that info! I know that the first time I saw it was after August 05 because the computer that I had the photos stored on arrived at my house right before Katrina, and the photos were taken soon after that.

My recollection is that there was a flagpole. I wish I had not lost those photos so we could see.

Every time I go to Oxford, I see this on the north side of Bruce just off of Highway 9. My wife and I even stopped and took a picture beside it.

    • Larry says:

You’re right! On the west side of hy 9. You have to look for it to see it.

First time I saw it was around 2005, I guess. It had a flagpole flying a US flag beside it. I had some photos of it with the flag, but they were lost in a hard drive crash.
