“It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little.” — Sydney Smith
“Our salvation is in striving to achieve what we know we’ll never achieve.” — Ryszard Kapuscinski
“You can’t leave footprints in the sands of time if you’re sitting on your butt — and who wants to leave butt prints in the sands of time?” — Bob Moawad

This link collects a number of charming and acute quotations from Sydney Smith, who is worthy of acquaintance.
Thanks for the link. I will explore in greater depth, but the “Taxonomy of Handshakes” piece reminded me of a lost tradition. When I was a boy back in the 1950’s, my grandfather taught me how a man should give and receive a handshake. Step up confidently, offer or receive the right hand, look the other in the eye, and grasp firmly. It was one of those little rituals that people used to size one another up.
Judging from many handshakes (among those who still do; there’s that whole germ thing, you know) nowadays, I think that tradition is fading into the past.
